But Saul was ravaging the church,
and entering house after house,
he dragged off men and women
and committed them to prison.
(Acts 8:3)
Defend Your Church, Lord Jesus, for evil forces are still at work in the world, threatening Your people with pain and loss. Keep me and every believer strong in the faith that clings to You and in likeness to You extends forgiveness even to those who inflict harm and insult. I pray this in Your name. Amen.
And Jesus answered them,
“Have faith in God.
Truly, I say to you,
whoever says to this mountain,
‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’
and does not doubt in his heart,
but believes that what he says
will come to pass,
it will be done for him.”
(Mark 11:22-23)
Spirit of Truth, since You have called me to faith in Christ Jesus, free me from all doubt and grant me the courage to pray for great things, fully believing that the God to Whom nothing is impossible will surely hear and answer me. This I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
And all that generation also
were gathered to their fathers.
And there arose another
generation after them
who did not know the LORD
or the work that He had done for Israel.
(Judges 2:10)
God of history and eternity, You are the Creator of all generations. Keep me mindful of faith’s privileged duty to pass on to the next generations the one gospel that is true for all ages—the gospel of Your Son’s death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sin and the salvation of sinners. In Jesus’ name. Amen
But as for you,
continue in what you have learned
and have firmly believed,
knowing from whom you learned it
and how from childhood
you have been acquainted
with the sacred writings,
which are able to
make you wise for salvation
through faith in Christ Jesus.
(2 Timothy 3:14)
You know, almighty God, that many of the things I believed in childhood I no longer hold to be true. Science and experience have convinced me otherwise. But the most important thing remains forever true. Keep me faithful to Your word, I pray, and to Your Word made flesh; through Whom I pray. Amen.
And the people of Israel
did secretly against the LORD their God
things that were not right.
(2 Kings 17:9a)
In Your great mercy, holy God, pardon for Jesus’ sake the shameful secrets I try to keep hidden from You and everyone else. Protect me against every temptation to indulge in vices that are out of line for a Christian and turn me from them in revulsion and repentance. Amen.
Jesus said to her,
“Everyone who drinks of this water
will be thirsty again,
but whoever drinks of the water
that I will give him
will never be thirsty again.
The water that I will give him
will become in him a spring of water
welling up to eternal life.”
(John 4:13-14)
Spirit of God, You hovered over the waters at creation, and You fill the waters of baptism with life-renewing power. Work within me a thirst that nothing but living water can quench, and lead me to Jesus, Whose wounded side has become the well that flows up to eternal life. Amen.
Wondrously show Your steadfast love,
O Savior of those who seek refuge
from their adversaries
at Your right hand.
(Psalm 17:7)
With hands pierced and bloodied by nails You show wondrous love, Lord Jesus. With those same hands, hold me close to Your heart, and use my hands, I pray, to help and sustain others who need refuge and strength. Amen.
